BMW’s mid-life refresh strategy is becoming increasingly sophisticated, particularly for its core models. Following the BMW 3 Series as a blueprint, expectations were high that the next-generation BMW 5 Series would follow suit, adopting a front-end design inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concept. However, the latest spy shots tell a different story.
A Measured Approach to Design
Instead of a complete overhaul embracing the new design language, BMW appears to be taking a more cautious approach to the current facelift, implementing controlled changes. A camouflaged prototype of the 2027 BMW 5 Series Touring reveals that the iconic kidney grille retains its familiar shape, but with a more streamlined and sharper appearance.
Refined Headlights and a Modern Front Fascia
The headlights are also a key detail. They don’t follow the radical experimental style seen on the iX3, but rather sit between the current BMW 5 Series and the upcoming Neue Klasse models. AI renderings based on these images provide a glimpse of what the BMW 5 Series facelift might look like when it enters production. While the changes aren’t as dramatic as initially anticipated, the new design is widely considered more appealing and balanced than the current version.
These renderings showcase a redesigned kidney grille, not the only update. The headlights become more incisive, with a redesigned daytime running light strip offering a sleek and sporty aesthetic. The front bumper has also been redrawn, eliminating the unnecessary details of the previous generation, creating a more modern and coherent overall look.
Subtle Changes to the Body and Rear
Like most facelifts, the body of the 2027 BMW 5 Series is likely to remain largely unchanged. Some wheel designs may be updated, but the overall shape and surface treatment are expected to stay consistent.
At the rear, adjustments are equally restrained. The taillight clusters maintain their current shape, but with revised internal graphics to enhance visual depth. These subtle changes are enough to create a more refined and sophisticated feel.
Interior: A Glimpse into the Future?
The extent to which BMW will incorporate elements from other Neue Klasse models into the interior remains unclear. The company may bring the 5 Series closer to the futuristic style of the iX3, featuring a wide, low-mounted Panoramic iDrive display on the dashboard, combined with a central infotainment screen angled towards the driver. The new four-spoke steering wheel from the iX3 is also expected to appear in the 5 Series cabin.
Powertrain Expectations
Mechanically, significant changes are unlikely. The current engine range is expected to be retained, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 255 horsepower, alongside a 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine. Diesel versions will continue to be available in suitable markets, alongside plug-in hybrid and all-electric BMW i5 models.
