Starting around March, Vietnam’s Department of Vehicle Inspection is set to replace the traditional paper inspection stickers with an electronic certificate. The shift, announced for implementation shortly after the Lunar New Year holidays, aims to streamline the vehicle registration process and curb the circulation of forged documents.
Why Go Digital?
Currently, after a successful safety and emissions test, owners receive a paper certificate that is stuck onto the windshield alongside a coloured sticker indicating the fuel type. This paper format is prone to damage, loss, and fraudulent duplication. An electronic version, linked directly to the driver’s VNeID (Vietnam’s national ID system) and VNeTraffic database, eliminates these risks and enables real‑time data updates.
How It Works
When a vehicle passes its inspection, the result is uploaded to the central system. The owner can then access a secured digital certificate via a mobile app or a web portal. If a hard copy is still desired, inspection stations can print a certified document directly from the system, reducing waste while providing a convenient backup.
What Changes on the Windshield?
Since the beginning of the year, the mandatory road‑tax sticker has already been removed. Only a single colour‑coded sticker indicating the inspection status remains: green for pure‑electric or environmentally‑friendly vehicles, orange for conventional internal‑combustion cars, and pink for dedicated motorcycles.
