In a move aimed at boosting both security and discretion, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has ordered the BMW X5 Protection, a high‑end armored SUV built for covert operations. The new vehicle will join a growing lineup of specialized law‑enforcement transports that demand both bullet‑proof resilience and premium comfort.

Why an armored SUV?

Traditional fleet options such as the Chevrolet Suburban have become widely recognizable, making low‑profile missions more challenging. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, the agency is gradually swapping out these familiar sedans for vehicles that blend stealth with survivability.

Protection levels: VR4 and VR6

The BMW X5 Protection is produced at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina and offers two certified protection standards – VR4 and the more robust VR6. The VR6 configuration features 30 mm laminate ballistic glass with a polycarbonate coating, capable of stopping 7.62 mm AK‑47 rounds as well as traditional handgun fire. Reinforced components include hardened electronics, bullet‑proof window frames, self‑sealing fuel tanks, and a chassis designed to deflect DM51 grenades.

Luxury that doesn’t compromise security

Inside, the SUV retains the hallmark BMW Live Cockpit Plus suite: a 14.9‑inch touchscreen central display, a 12.3‑inch digital instrument cluster, and Fineline wood trim. Climate control spans four zones with an advanced air‑filtering system, while the cabin is upholstered in premium Merino leather. Optional heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, an M‑Leather sport steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon surround‑sound system ensure that agents travel in comfort.

Powertrain options

Standard models come with a 3.0‑liter inline‑six engine delivering 381 hp. For those who demand extra performance, a 4.4‑liter twin‑turbo V8 pushes output to 530 hp, providing swift acceleration even with the added weight of armor.

Cost and availability

In the civilian market, a BMW X5 xDrive40i starts at US$69,900, while the fully armored X5 Protection can reach roughly US$130,000. Exact pricing and configuration details for the FBI’s order remain confidential.

Not a brand‑new choice

The X5 Protection is already familiar to U.S. diplomatic security. The Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service deployed the same model during the 80th UN General Assembly in September 2025, proving its reliability in high‑risk environments.

With its blend of ballistic protection, premium amenities, and powerful engines, the BMW X5 Protection positions the FBI at the forefront of secure, low‑visibility transportation.
