The Chinese automaker Geely has unveiled a prototype that could reshape how we think about urban electric vehicles. The Geely EX5, an all‑electric crossover built on the company’s modular GEA architecture, features a startling new steering concept: each wheel can rotate up to 90 degrees, allowing the vehicle to turn on the spot and slide sideways like a camera dolly.

Groundbreaking Steering System

At the heart of the EX5’s innovation is a set of four in‑wheel electric motors. Unlike conventional setups where a single motor powers a drive axle, Geely places a motor directly inside each wheel. This configuration gives the vehicle independent control of every tire, enabling a full 90° rotation for both front and rear axles.

In practice, the EX5 can perform a zero‑radius turn—essentially spinning in place—followed by a lateral “crab” movement. The technology promises dramatically easier parking in tight city streets and enhanced manoeuvrability on crowded lots.

Stability and Safety

Geely’s engineers claim the system also improves stability on slippery surfaces and during strong crosswinds. By actively adjusting each wheel’s angle and torque, the vehicle can maintain traction where traditional steering would struggle.

Side‑ways steering isn’t entirely new. Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, the Hummer EV, Mercedes‑Benz’s Vision AVTR concept, and several SAIC‑owned brands such as IM have all showcased similar capabilities. However, Geely’s approach differs by integrating the motors within the wheels, potentially offering a more compact solution without external steering linkages.

Potential Drawbacks

Analysts at CarNewsChina note a design compromise: the rear wheel arches appear enlarged to accommodate the 90° rotation, which could reduce interior cabin space. The prototype’s rear windows are covered with black film, suggesting the rear seat row may have been omitted to make room for the steering hardware.
