More than 40,000 2024 Mazda CX-90 SUVs sold in the United States could be subject to a second recall after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reopened its investigation into a steering‑assist problem that can compromise driver control.

Background of the first recall

Earlier this year, Mazda launched a massive recall (campaign code 24V022) targeting the CX-90’s steering system. The defect stemmed from the screw‑type gear within the power‑steering rack overheating, which degraded the lubricating grease. As a result, steering torque could shift abruptly, making the wheel feel “heavy” or “sticky” under certain conditions.

To remedy the issue, Mazda applied a fresh grease pack and rolled out an updated control‑module software that monitors torque fluctuations and alerts the driver before a failure becomes dangerous.

Why the investigation is back on

Despite the corrective actions, NHTSA has now received at least 26 new consumer complaints stating that the steering wheel suddenly becomes harder to turn, even after the vehicle was serviced under the original recall. The agency warns that any unexpected change in steering effort can raise the risk of a collision—particularly at highway speeds or when evasive maneuvers are required.

The reopened probe, identified as case RQ26002, covers roughly 43,752 CX-90s from the 2024 model year that were sold in the U.S. So far, officials have linked two accidents to the steering defect, though no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.

Potential outcomes

If NHTSA concludes that Mazda’s earlier fix is insufficient, the manufacturer will be forced to launch a more extensive recall. That could involve replacing the entire steering rack, redesigning the cooling pathway, or introducing a more robust software solution.

Implications for other markets

The CX-90, a full‑size plug‑in hybrid SUV, is also slated for launch in Vietnam, where Mazda began taking deposits in early January. It remains unclear whether the Vietnamese shipment will be affected by the U.S. recall, as the vehicles are expected to be imported rather than locally assembled.
