U.S. safety regulators have opened a formal investigation into the 2024 Mazda CX‑90 after a growing number of owners reported that the vehicle’s steering feels unusually heavy and, at times, does not return to a neutral position. What triggered the NHTSA inquiry?

In early 2024 Mazda issued a recall for CX‑90 models built that year, citing a “stuck steering wheel” problem. Engineers traced the fault to the screw‑type gear assembly inside the electric power‑steering (EPS) system, which could generate abnormal friction under certain driving conditions. The remedy involved lubricating the gear set and installing a software update designed to detect the fault before it manifested.

Nearly two years later, Mazda and its customers are still seeing the problem reappear. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has logged 26 consumer complaints and several Early Warning Reports (EWRs) that describe sudden, intermittent spikes in steering effort during normal driving.
