Mercedes-Benz recalls 169 EQB EVs due to fire risk. Learn why charging over 80% is discouraged & get recall details. Check if your vehicle is affected!

Mercedes-Benz has issued a warning to owners of its electric vehicles, and announced a recall affecting 169 EQB models. The German automaker advises drivers to avoid charging their batteries beyond 80% to mitigate the risk of a dangerous issue known as “thermal runaway.” This refers to a short circuit within the battery cells that can potentially lead to a fire.

EQB Recall Details

The recall impacts the following EQB models:

  • 100 EQB 300 vehicles
  • 48 EQB 350 4Matic vehicles
  • 21 EQB 250 vehicles

This isn’t the first time Mercedes-Benz has addressed battery concerns. Previously, the company recalled over 7,000 vehicles in the United States for similar fire-related issues. In that instance, Mercedes-Benz also recommended limiting charging to 80% until a software update was available.

What Causes the Issue?

The current recall focuses on “early-stage” EQB models manufactured in 2022-2023. Mercedes-Benz assures customers that the batteries in later EQB models are more robust and are not subject to this recall. The problem stems from a potential for short circuits within the battery pack when charged to full capacity.

What to Do If Your Vehicle is Affected

Owners of affected EQB vehicles may receive a warning on their dashboard if temperatures under the vehicle increase during driving. However, the EQB’s parking lights may also illuminate without any accompanying warning.

Mercedes-Benz will provide a software update to address the issue, rather than replacing the battery packs. Owners are encouraged to schedule a service appointment at an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership to receive the update.

Importance of Battery Safety

Battery fires are particularly challenging to extinguish quickly, making preventative measures crucial. Mercedes-Benz’s proactive approach highlights the importance of ongoing safety monitoring and software improvements in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape. Limiting charging to 80% is a simple step owners can take to reduce risk while a permanent solution is implemented.
