Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has let a few tantalising glimpses of its next‑generation Range Rover Velar EV on public roads, confirming that the iconic midsize SUV is moving fully into the electric era. The prototype, seen during a test drive, showcases a fresh design language and a host of technical upgrades that position the Velar EV as a direct rival to the upcoming Porsche Macan EV and other premium electric SUVs.

Design Inspiration from Tata’s Concept Cars

The Velar EV’s silhouette bears a striking resemblance to the Tata Avinya concept, a design cue that makes sense given Tata’s ownership of JLR. Key visual elements include a sharper front fascia, ultra‑thin LED light strips, a closed‑off grille typical of EVs, and smoother, more aerodynamic body lines compared with the current gasoline‑powered Velar.

Other styling highlights are concealed door handles, aerodynamic side mirrors, and a set of large alloy wheels that give the vehicle a coupe‑like proportion. The lower roofline and slimmer cabin width hint at a more athletic stance, while the flat floor—made possible by the electric platform—creates extra legroom for rear‑seat occupants.

New 800V Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA)

Under the skin, the Velar EV will ride on JLR’s brand‑new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), an 800‑volt platform that will also underpin future Range Rover EVs and Tata’s next EV offerings. The high‑voltage system permits thinner wiring, reduces overall vehicle weight and enhances thermal management, which is crucial for high‑performance electric powertrains.

Battery Capacity, Range and Fast‑Charging

JLR plans to equip the Velar EV with a battery pack ranging from 80 kWh to 100 kWh, delivering an estimated WLTP range of 500–720 km (310–447 miles) depending on the specific configuration. Thanks to the 800 V architecture, the SUV can accept up to 350 kW of DC fast‑charging, enabling a 10‑to‑80 % charge in roughly 20 minutes.

The battery modules will be sourced from Tata Group’s new Gigafactory in Somerset, United Kingdom, ensuring a secure supply chain for the European market.

Positioning in the Luxury Electric SUV Segment

The Velar EV will slot between the compact Evoque EV and the larger Range Rover Sport EV within JLR’s electric lineup. Its launch is slated for the end of the current year, giving it a head start on competitors such as the BMW iX, Mercedes‑EQE SUV, Audi Q8 e‑tron and, most notably, the upcoming Porsche Macan EV.

By targeting the midsize, premium‑luxury niche, JLR aims to capture buyers who desire the classic Range Rover styling but want the efficiency and performance of an all‑electric powertrain.

Launch Timeline and Outlook

In addition to the Velar EV debut, JLR will introduce the flagship Range Rover Electric later this year, followed by the Range Rover Sport EV in 2026 and the Evoque EV slated for 2027. This aggressive rollout underscores JLR’s commitment to electrification and its determination to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

As more details emerge, the automotive world will be watching closely to see how the new Velar EV reshapes the luxury SUV landscape.
