Subaru has issued an urgent recall for 70,000 Crosstrek and Forester hybrids in the US due to fuel‑leak fire hazards. Learn how to protect your vehicle and schedule free repairs today.

What Triggered the Recall?

Subaru announced an emergency recall affecting almost 70,000 vehicles sold in the United States. The models in question are the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (17,446 units) and the 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid (51,707 units). Both groups share a common defect that could lead to a fuel‑leak fire.

Technical Reason Behind the Hazard

The problem originates from the fuel‑tank cap assembly. A faulty sealing gasket fails to meet safety standards, allowing fuel to escape when the tank is full and ambient temperatures rise. As the gasoline expands, pressure builds inside the tank, forcing fuel up the neck and out through the imperfect seal. If an ignition source is present, the leaked fuel can ignite, creating a serious fire risk.

Safety Recommendations from Subaru

Until a fix is installed, Subaru urges owners to avoid parking the affected vehicles inside garages, basements, or any enclosed structure. Instead, park outdoors, at least 20 feet away from buildings or other combustible materials. Additionally, fill the tank no more than 50% of its capacity to limit pressure buildup.

Repair Plan and Timeline

Subaru will replace the faulty fuel‑tank cap with an upgraded unit that includes an improved gasket and an added O‑ring for a tighter seal. The repair will be performed at authorized dealerships at no cost to the owner. Notification letters are expected to be mailed by the end of March 2026, with parts arriving shortly thereafter.

Impact on New Orders

Customers who have already placed orders for the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid will receive vehicles equipped with the revised cap assembly, ensuring they are not subject to the recall.
