For those dreaming of tackling trails but can’t quite reach for a Porsche 911 Dakar, Kuhl Racing has unveiled a compelling alternative: a rugged, off-road-focused take on the popular Toyota GR86.

A Rally-Inspired Transformation

The Japanese tuning house, Kuhl Racing, has transformed the GR86 into a capable off-road machine, designed to venture far beyond the confines of paved roads. Officially debuting at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, the GR86 Outroad is slated for release to customers in Japan next year.

Enhanced Suspension and Ground Clearance

The GR86 Outroad retains the original’s rear-wheel-drive coupe platform but features significant upgrades to its suspension and exterior. Kuhl Racing has installed a custom suspension system, lifting the vehicle approximately 3 inches higher than the stock ride height. An optional hydraulic lift system provides an additional 1.6 inches of lift when needed, allowing for increased ground clearance on challenging terrain, and lowering back down for normal road driving. This dramatically improves its ability to navigate rough surfaces.

Aggressive Exterior Styling

Visually, the GR86 Outroad embraces a distinct “rally-inspired” aesthetic. Larger fender flares, redesigned front and rear bumpers optimize approach and departure angles, while underbody protection, auxiliary lights, and a roof rack contribute to a dynamic, adventure-ready appearance. These additions not only enhance practicality but also give the GR86 a more muscular and imposing presence.

Performance Boost

Kuhl Racing has retained the GR86’s original 2.4-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine but offers an optional turbo package. This upgrade adds approximately 50 horsepower through the installation of a turbocharger, along with upgrades to the cooling system and ECU remapping. With this package, total output can reach over 280 horsepower – a significant increase over the standard model. Customers can choose between a manual or automatic transmission.

Complete Conversion Kit

Importantly, the GR86 Outroad isn’t just a one-off show car. Kuhl Racing plans to offer it as a complete conversion kit for existing GR86 owners. Customers can purchase the entire upgrade package or select individual components, such as the suspension, body kit, wheels, brakes, and performance upgrades, to tailor the modifications to their specific needs.

Pricing and Availability

The complete Outroad package is priced at approximately 4.15 million yen (around $695 million VND), excluding the base GR86 vehicle. Individual components, like the body kit, wheels, and turbo package, are also available for separate purchase, allowing for a customized level of modification.

A New Breed of Sports Coupe

With the GR86 Outroad, Kuhl Racing is injecting a fresh perspective into the sports coupe market by blending off-road capability with rally-inspired styling. This “fun and practicality” approach is gaining traction among car enthusiasts, particularly those seeking a more versatile driving experience beyond the confines of the street and racetrack.
