British motorcycle maker Triumph has announced plans to launch a new 350cc motorcycle, with an initial rollout slated for April in India. The move is designed to tap into the country’s favourable tax regime and broaden the brand’s appeal among cost‑conscious riders.

Why a 350cc Model?

Until now, Triumph’s smallest offering in the Indian market has been a 400cc bike, which is subject to a hefty 40% GST. By reducing engine displacement to below 350cc, the new model qualifies for the lower 18% GST rate, allowing Triumph and its joint‑venture partner Bajaj to price the bike more competitively.

Engine Roots in the 400 Series

The upcoming powerplant isn’t built from scratch. It is based on the liquid‑cooled, single‑cylinder 400cc engine found in the Triumph Speed 400, the Scrambler 400 X, and the Thruxton 400. By slightly reducing the bore size, the displacement drops under 350cc, which trims the output by roughly 3–5 horsepower—delivering about 37 hp and 37.5 Nm of torque compared with the 40 hp of the 400‑cc version.

Launch Timeline and Market Positioning

Triumph aims to debut the 350cc motorcycle in India this April, positioning it as a more accessible entry point without sacrificing the premium DNA of its larger siblings. The reduced tax burden and a lower price tag are expected to attract a wider demographic, especially younger riders and those transitioning from commuter bikes.

Current Triumph Line‑up in Vietnam

In Vietnam, Triumph currently offers two 400cc models: the Speed 400 priced at VND 169.9 million and the Scrambler 400 X at VND 189.9 million. The arrival of a 350cc variant could similarly reshape pricing dynamics in the Vietnamese market, though no official release date has been announced there yet.
