Volkswagen, together with its joint venture SAIC‑Volkswagen, has pulled back the curtain on the interior of the upcoming ID. Era 9X – the brand’s first large‑format, extended‑range electric SUV built for the Chinese market. Set to hit production in early 2026, the 9X is positioned as the flagship of the ID. Era family, taking on rivals such as the Zeekr 9X, Li Auto L9 and IM LS9.

Design & Digital Cabin
The ID. Era 9X follows a “fusion of square and circle” design language, with a cabin that feels like a high‑tech lounge. Three screens dominate the interior:

- A 15.6‑inch central display for the driver and front passenger.
- A 21.4‑inch fold‑down screen that slides out for rear‑seat passengers.
- An expansive 31.2‑inch overhead panel that spans almost the entire roof, creating an immersive digital experience.
All three screens are framed by a 12.8‑meter ambient‑lighting strip that runs along the roofline and doors, delivering a harmonious glow that can be customized to suit any mood. A panoramic sunroof caps the interior, while a flat‑bottom steering wheel and slim digital instrument cluster keep the cockpit clean and driver‑focused.

Size & Space
Measuring 5,207 mm long, 1,997 mm wide and 1,810 mm tall, the ID. Era 9X offers a generous wheelbase of 3,070 mm. The three‑row, six‑seat layout provides ample room for families, with the rear screen adding entertainment value for passengers on longer trips.

Powertrain & Range
Under the hood, the SUV adopts a plug‑in hybrid architecture:

- A 1.5‑litre turbocharged gasoline engine that functions as a generator, delivering up to 141 hp.
- A rear‑mounted electric motor producing 295 hp.
- Two battery options – 51.1 kWh or 65.2 kWh – giving an electric‑only range of roughly 267 km to 340 km (CLTC).
The base rear‑wheel‑drive model weighs around 2,600 kg. For buyers who want extra traction, an all‑wheel‑drive (AWD) version adds a 215 hp front electric motor, pushing total system output to 510 hp and extending pure‑electric range to about 400 km (CLTC) when paired with the larger 65.2 kWh pack.

Positioning in the Market
With its bold digital cockpit, spacious dimensions and hybrid powertrain, the ID. Era 9X aims to capture affluent families seeking a premium EV experience without sacrificing practicality. Its mix of cutting‑edge tech and familiar Volkswagen build quality could make it a strong contender in China’s fast‑growing electric SUV segment.

What’s Next?
Volkswagen plans to officially launch the ID. Era 9X in March 2026. As the brand rolls out its digital‑first strategy, the 9X will likely serve as a showcase for future infotainment and lighting innovations across the global ID lineup.
