In a historic meeting at the Vatican, Ford CEO Jim Farley and his wife presented Pope Leo XIV with a uniquely customized Ford Explorer Platinum.

Chicago Roots Meet Vatican Tradition
The SUV was assembled at Ford’s Chicago plant – the very city where the Pope was born, making him the first U.S.-born pontiff in Catholic history. Every detail of the vehicle pays tribute to the Windy City.

Design Details Inspired by Chicago
- Exterior in sleek black with a rich brown interior.
- Each seat bears a stitched Chicago flag.
- The steering column features an embroidered skyline of Chicago’s iconic horizon.
- Door sills are embellished with the Chicago seal linked to the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica, symbolising the Pope’s faith journey.
Powertrain Reserved for Elite Vehicles
The Explorer is equipped with a 3.3‑liter V6 hybrid engine paired with a 10‑speed automatic hybrid transmission, delivering 289 hp and 353 Nm of torque. This powertrain is normally exclusive to the Ford Police Interceptor Utility.

Personal Touches
Special licence plates reading “DA POPE” and “LEO XIV” adorn the vehicle. According to Farley, Pope Leo XIV plans to use the Explorer for short trips around Vatican City.

What It Means for Ford
Beyond being a diplomatic gesture, the bespoke Explorer showcases Ford’s ability to blend American engineering with personalized luxury, positioning the brand at the intersection of heritage and innovation.
