The dream of owning an affordable new car is becoming increasingly elusive in the United States, and Nissan is sounding the alarm. The Japanese automaker has warned that proposed tariffs on vehicles manufactured in Mexico could effectively kill the affordability of its entry-level models.
The Cost of “Made in USA”
According to reports from Carscoops, Nissan believes that if the Trump administration forces automakers to shift production from Mexico to the U.S., the resulting surge in operational costs will be passed directly to the consumer. While the goal is to boost domestic manufacturing, the immediate side effect would be a price hike for the average driver.
Currently, Nissan relies on its Mexican facilities to produce the Sentra and Kicks. The lower labor costs in Mexico allow the company to keep these models accessible to a wider demographic. For context, the Nissan Sentra currently starts at approximately $22,600, while the standard Kicks begins around $22,430.
The Financial Impact on Consumers
Nissan executives estimate that tariffs on Mexico-made vehicles could add between $2,500 and $3,000 to the price of each car. This is a significant blow considering that vehicles assembled in Mexico accounted for more than 33% of Nissan’s total U.S. sales last year.
The industry has already seen the fallout of rising costs. The Nissan Versa (known as the Almera in markets like Vietnam) was once the last remaining new car in the U.S. priced under $20,000, starting as low as $17,300. However, the model has since been withdrawn from the U.S. market, leaving a void in the budget segment.
A Market Already Under Pressure
The timing of these potential tariffs is particularly concerning given the current state of the U.S. auto market. Data from Kelley Blue Book shows that the average transaction price for a new vehicle in the U.S. stands at $49,353. While this is a slight dip from the December 2026 peak of $50,326, it highlights a market where affordable options are nearly extinct.
Speaking at the New York Automotive Forum, Christian Meunier, President of Nissan North America, emphasized that profit margins on economy cars are razor-thin. He argued that it is simply not financially viable to produce these entry-level vehicles within the U.S. while maintaining the same low price points.
The Geopolitical Tug-of-War: USMCA and Trump
Nissan is currently in discussions with U.S. lawmakers to explore the possibility of easing import tariffs. While Meunier suggests that the U.S. government has shown some openness to these talks, the final decision remains highly uncertain under the leadership of Donald Trump.
Much of the tension revolves around the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The trade deal is approaching a mandatory review period before its scheduled renewal on July 1st. While the agreement could potentially be extended for another 16 years, President Trump has expressed a lack of interest in the current framework.
Trump has been vocal about his desire to dismantle reliance on foreign production, stating, “We don’t need cars made in Canada, we don’t need cars made in Mexico; we want to make them here, and that is what is happening.”
As the review date looms, the automotive industry waits anxiously to see if the pursuit of domestic production will come at the cost of the American consumer’s ability to afford a new car.
