BMW is phasing out the iX in the US to pave the way for the Neue Klasse electric SUV lineup. See what’s replacing it. Read more!
Since its debut in 2021, the BMW iX has served as the flagship of BMW’s electric ambition—a bold, oversized SUV that pushed the boundaries of design and technology. However, the automotive landscape moves quickly, and BMW is now preparing for its next great leap. In a strategic move to refresh its portfolio, BMW has decided to discontinue the iX in the United States.
Making Room for the ‘Neue Klasse’ Generation
The decision to pull the iX from the US market isn’t a sign of failure, but rather a strategic pivot. BMW is currently preparing a wave of next-generation electric SUVs under the highly anticipated Neue Klasse architecture. These new models are designed to be more efficient, more intuitive, and more aligned with traditional BMW aesthetics.

The transition is already underway with a diversifying lineup:
- BMW iX3: Already beginning deliveries in Europe and expected to arrive in the US by the end of this year.
- BMW iX5: A brand-new model slated for launch later this year.
- BMW iX7: The ultimate luxury electric SUV, expected to make its debut in 2027.
Industry analysts suggest that the iX has become redundant. With the iX5 and iX7 on the horizon, the iX no longer fits neatly into the product hierarchy. The newer models promise superior driving range, significantly faster charging speeds, and a design language that is more accessible to the average luxury buyer.
A Global Transition: What Happens Next?
While the US is seeing the first wave of the iX’s exit, the model isn’t disappearing worldwide just yet. BMW has confirmed that production will continue at the Dingolfing plant in Germany to serve international markets during this transitional period.

Insiders suggest that the final BMW iX could roll off the assembly line around mid-2028. This means that in certain global markets, the iX will coexist with the iX5 for roughly two years and overlap with the iX7 for at least a year, ensuring a smooth transition for customers.
What This Means for US Buyers
For those in the United States looking to get behind the wheel of a BMW iX, the window is closing fast. While some dealerships may still have remaining inventory, production data indicates that 2026 model year volumes will be “very limited,” and there will be no 2027 model produced for the US market.
It is important to note that while the upcoming iX3 will enter the US market soon, it is too small to be a direct replacement for the iX. Instead, the heavy lifting for the luxury SUV segment will be handled by the iX5 and iX7, both of which are positioned for a higher premium segment.
Optimizing Production for the Future
Beyond the product lineup, this move is also about operational efficiency. Phasing out the iX, along with the 8 Series, allows BMW to free up critical capacity at the Dingolfing plant. This space is essential for the production of the next-generation BMW 3 Series, scheduled for release late this year.
Furthermore, BMW is diversifying its assembly lines. While the 3 Series takes center stage at Dingolfing, the electric wagon variants are expected to be assembled in Munich alongside the i3 Sedan, showcasing BMW’s comprehensive plan to electrify its most iconic silhouettes.
