Japanese automaker Isuzu is quietly gearing up to introduce plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its flagship pickup, the D‑Max, and its midsize SUV, the Mu‑X. The move aims to keep the models viable as governments tighten emissions rules worldwide.

Why a hybrid now?

Speaking at the Tokyo Motor Show, an Isuzu spokesperson told Drive that hybrid technology “is a way to ensure the survival of trucks” amid stricter pollutant standards. While the company won’t confirm a launch timetable, it revealed that a PHEV D‑Max could hit the market as early as 2027.

Competing with the likes of Ford and BYD

Isuzu sees the upcoming Ford Ranger PHEV as a primary rival, and Chinese EV maker BYD as another benchmark. “We are watching Ford and BYD closely to decide what works best for us – performance, price and overall value,” the representative said.

Powertrain possibilities

The company is evaluating both gasoline and diesel engines for the hybrid system. Since the D‑Max has never been offered with a gasoline engine, a diesel‑based plug‑in hybrid appears more realistic. A 2.2‑litre four‑cylinder turbo diesel, already used in other Isuzu trucks, produces 161 hp and 400 Nm of torque and could be paired with an eight‑speed automatic transmission.

By contrast, the long‑standing 1.9‑litre diesel that currently powers many D‑Max models may be phased out in favour of the newer hybrid‑ready powerplant.

What’s next for the Mu‑X?

Isuzu confirmed that the same hybrid‑plug‑in technology is being explored for the Mu‑X SUV, though details remain sparse.

With emissions regulations tightening globally, a plug‑in hybrid D‑Max and Mu‑X could give Isuzu a competitive edge while catering to customers who still need the utility of a traditional pickup or SUV.
