From October to December 2025, Toyota’s latest bZ4X topped the pure‑electric‑vehicle (BEV) charts in Japan. In November and December it even led the entire BEV segment, outselling kei‑cars and every other electric model on the market.

The bZ4X is offered in three configurations:

  • Front‑wheel drive (FWD) with a 74.7 kWh battery – 224 hp, up to 746 km (464 mi) WLTP range.
  • All‑wheel drive (AWD) with a 74.7 kWh battery – power raised from 218 hp to 342 hp, faster charging and longer real‑world range.
  • FWD with a smaller 57.7 kWh pack for buyers seeking a lower‑priced entry point.

All top‑trim versions now exceed 700 km of range, easing range‑anxiety concerns that have traditionally slowed EV adoption.

Government Incentives Accelerate Growth

From January 2026 the Japanese Clean‑Energy Vehicle (CEV) subsidy for the bZ4X will increase from ¥900,000 (≈ $5,700) to ¥1.3 million (≈ $8,300). Coupled with its extended driving range, the financial boost makes the bZ4X an especially attractive choice for eco‑conscious consumers.
