Record‑breaking sales

During October the model sold 1,106 units – an astonishing 1,300% increase compared with the same month a year earlier. November saw 1,580 units sold (up 3,000%), and December delivered 762 more cars, a 4,233% jump. In total, the bZ4X captured 11,000 orders in less than a quarter.

Why the bZ4X is resonating

The mid‑life refresh, launched in March 2025, introduced a bold “hammerhead” front design, new LED daytime running lights and a more aerodynamic silhouette. Under the skin, Toyota upgraded the e‑Axle system and the on‑board Electricity Supply Unit (ESU) to boost both power and efficiency.

  • Three powertrain options: front‑wheel drive (FWD) with 74.7 kWh battery, all‑wheel drive (AWD) with the same capacity, and a lower‑range FWD with a 57.7 kWh pack.
  • The 74.7 kWh FWD version delivers 224 hp and a WLTP‑estimated range of up to 746 km.
  • The AWD variant jumps to 342 hp, shortens charging time and extends real‑world driving distance.

Competitive edge

In November and December the bZ4X not only led the pure‑EV segment but also outperformed every other BEV in Japan, including kei‑car electric models. It overtook Honda’s N‑ONE e in the final two months of the year, cementing its position as the country’s best‑selling electric SUV.

Broader Toyota EV strategy

Alongside the bZ4X, Toyota currently tops sales charts for hybrid (HEV), plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) and fuel‑cell (FCEV) models, reflecting the company’s “multi‑path” approach to decarbonisation. The surge in BEV sales highlights the growing importance of fully electric models in Toyota’s future roadmap.

Incentives fueling growth

From January 2026, the Japanese government will raise the Clean‑Energy Vehicle (CEV) subsidy for the bZ4X from ¥900,000 (≈ $5,700) to ¥1.3 million (≈ $8,300). All high‑spec trims already exceed a 700 km range, easing range‑anxiety and driving further adoption of the new generation BEV.

With strong performance figures, an appealing design, and generous incentives, the Toyota bZ4X is set to keep shaping Japan’s electric‑vehicle landscape throughout 2026 and beyond.
