The global transition toward sustainable mobility is gaining fresh momentum. According to the latest data from consultancy firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI), global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has seen a consecutive monthly increase, driven largely by volatile fuel prices pushing consumers away from traditional internal combustion engines (ICE).

Global Registration Trends: A Steady Climb

In April, new registrations for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose by 6% year-on-year, totaling approximately 1.6 million units. While the overall trend is positive, the growth is far from uniform across different regions, revealing a complex geopolitical and economic landscape.

Europe: Leading the Charge

Europe continues to be a powerhouse for EV adoption. In April alone, registrations jumped by 27% to roughly 400,000 vehicles. This growth is supported by aggressive government policies and massive infrastructure investments. Recent studies show that the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland have funneled nearly 200 billion euros ($235 billion) into the EV ecosystem to ensure long-term sustainability.

China: Domestic Slump, Export Boom

The situation in China presents a striking paradox. Domestically, registrations dipped by 8% in April, falling to around 850,000 units. This decline is attributed to the expiration of tax incentives and the phase-out of programs that encouraged consumers to trade in old vehicles for new electric models.

However, Chinese manufacturers are offsetting domestic losses by aggressively expanding into international markets. In April alone, exports exceeded 400,000 units. In the first four months of the year, total exports reached nearly 1.4 million vehicles—more than double the volume seen during the same period last year.

Strategic Pivot: Manufacturing in Europe

To bypass tariffs and reduce logistics costs, Chinese brands are establishing local footprints in Europe:

  • Stellantis & Leapmotor: Plans are underway to produce the Leapmotor B10 electric SUV at the Zaragoza plant in Spain starting in 2026.
  • XPeng: The company has already begun local production of the P7+ at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria.
  • BYD: The industry giant is continuing to scale up production at its facility in Szeged, Hungary.

Even established players like Volkswagen are adapting. CEO Oliver Blume suggested that sharing underutilized factory space with Chinese automakers could be a “smart solution” to address Europe’s current overcapacity in production.

North America: Political and Economic Headwinds

In contrast to Europe, North America is facing a significant downturn. Registrations plummeted by 28% to 120,000 units in April. This slump is linked to the end of key US tax credit programs and proposed regulatory shifts by the Trump administration to loosen carbon dioxide emission standards.

However, the regional outlook isn’t entirely bleak. Mexico has emerged as a bright spot with sales surging nearly 50% this year, while Canada’s slight 7% dip is expected to reverse following the introduction of new incentive programs.

The Bottom Line: A Shifting Market Share

Despite the imposition of EU tariffs, Chinese brands are successfully capturing the European market. Data from BMI reveals that 22% of all EVs and PHEVs sold in Europe during the first four months of the year were Chinese-made, up from 19% in the previous year. As the industry evolves, the battle for global dominance will likely be decided by who can best balance local production with competitive pricing.
