At the Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) 2026, BYD once again stole the spotlight, reporting a massive surge in orders across the Thai market. However, beneath the impressive numbers lies a complex challenge regarding pricing strategies and the fragile nature of consumer trust.
Record-Breaking Numbers with a Catch
BYD emerged as the top performer at the 47th BIMS, securing a total of 17,354 orders. When including its luxury sub-brand, Denza—which contributed another 703 units—the total climbed to 18,057 vehicles. While these figures signal dominant growth, there is an important nuance to the data: BYD calculated its sales across the entire Thai market, whereas many competing brands only reported orders placed directly at the event.
The Fan Favorites: Proven Models Over New Releases
Interestingly, the highest demand wasn’t for the newest reveals, but for established models that have already carved out a niche in Thailand. The top performers included:
- BYD Atto 3: 3,565 orders
- BYD Dolphin: 3,250 orders
- BYD Sealion 6 DM-i: 2,406 orders (the popular C-segment PHEV SUV)
The Price Paradox: Attracting Buyers vs. Eroding Trust
This surge in demand suggests that the appetite for BYD vehicles remains strong, despite a previous wave of backlash on social media. The controversy stemmed from aggressive price cuts on core models, which left early adopters feeling cheated.
Currently, a combination of more attractive pricing and rising fuel costs has led many consumers to overlook past grievances in favor of the cost-saving benefits of an electric vehicle (EV). However, this creates a precarious situation for the brand.
The Gap Between Orders and Registrations
Industry analysts warn that order numbers do not always translate to road presence. Statistically, actual vehicle registrations often fall roughly 30% short of initial orders. This discrepancy is typically driven by delivery delays or customers failing to secure financing, leading them to switch to alternative brands.
