Honda recalls 440,000 Odyssey minivans due to unexpected airbag deployment over bumps and potholes. See if your vehicle is affected here.
Airbags are designed to be life-saving devices during a collision, but when they deploy at the wrong time or for the wrong reason, they can become a source of injury themselves. This is the exact concern driving a massive recall for over 440,000 Honda Odyssey minivans.
The Root of the Problem: Potholes and Speed Bumps
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain Honda Odyssey models are prone to an alarming glitch: side airbags in the second and third rows may deploy unexpectedly. Surprisingly, the trigger isn’t always a crash.
Investigations revealed that under specific conditions—such as driving over road debris (bricks or stones), hitting deep potholes, or crossing speed bumps—the activation threshold for the side airbags can be exceeded. This causes the system to misinterpret the impact as a collision, leading to an accidental deployment.
A Long Road to the Recall
The timeline of this safety issue is notably long. Honda was first notified of a potential incident in November 2017. While an investigation in July 2021 confirmed the risk, the manufacturer initially suggested there was no immediate safety threat. However, following a preliminary evaluation request from the NHTSA, the official recall was finally issued on April 2nd.

This delay means the issue persisted for nearly a decade from the first reported incident. The scale of the recall is significant, affecting 440,830 Odyssey minivans from the 2018-2022 model years. To date, there have been 25 reported injuries and 130 warranty claims related to this defect.
How Honda is Fixing the Issue
For owners of affected vehicles, Honda dealerships will provide a remedy at no cost. Depending on the specific vehicle’s needs, technicians will either:
- Reprogram the electronic control unit of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
- Completely replace the SRS control module if necessary.
Immediate Safety Recommendations for Owners
While waiting for the official repair, Honda advises owners to exercise extreme caution. To minimize the risk of accidental deployment, consider the following precautions:
- Reduce Speed: Drive slowly when traversing rough terrain, uneven surfaces, or speed bumps.
- Strategic Seating: Whenever possible, have passengers sit in the front row, as these airbags are not affected by this specific issue.
- Middle Seat Option: Sitting in the center of the rear seats may provide more safety if a side airbag suddenly deploys.
Broader Safety Concerns for the Odyssey
This recall comes at a time when Honda’s minivan safety is under scrutiny. A recent safety test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) highlighted deficiencies in rear-passenger protection. Specifically, the 2026 Odyssey received the lowest score among tested minivans in the small overlap front crash test.
The IIHS noted a “Poor” rating due to a high risk of head and neck injuries for rear occupants, and a “Marginal” rating for chest injury risks. This adds further pressure on Honda to ensure that its passenger protection systems are not only reliable but highly effective across all seating rows.
