Honda is recalling over 663,000 US vehicles due to rear suspension corrosion that could cause loss of control. Find out if your model is affected today.

Honda has issued a massive safety recall affecting more than 663,000 Honda cars and an additional 217,000 Acura SUVs across the United States. The problem? Corrosion that can weaken the rear‑suspension mounting points, potentially leading to loss of vehicle control.

Which models are included?

  • Honda Pilot – model years 2016‑2022 (463,253 vehicles)
  • Honda Ridgeline – model years 2017‑2023 (110,070 vehicles)
  • Honda Passport – model years 2019‑2023 (89,674 vehicles)
  • Acura MDX – model years 2014‑2020 (217,517 vehicles)

In total, roughly 880,000 vehicles could be affected once the Acura models are added to the count.

Why is this happening?

The issue stems from a protective coating failure on the rear‑frame sub‑structures that support the suspension. In the so‑called “salt belt” states—northern regions where winter road‑treatment salts are heavily used—the coating can peel or chip, exposing bare metal to salt, moisture, and road grime. Over time, this accelerates rust formation, weakening the mounting brackets that hold the rear control arms.

Potential safety impact

If corrosion progresses unchecked, the mounting points can crack or break. This may cause the rear wheels to misalign, reducing stability, compromising braking performance, and in extreme cases, allowing the suspension arm to detach entirely. Drivers might notice:

  • Unusual clunking or rattling noises from the rear suspension
  • Vibrations or a loose‑feeling ride
  • Changes in steering response, especially when cornering

These symptoms often appear before a complete failure, giving owners a chance to act.

How to know if your vehicle is affected

Owners can check eligibility by entering the VIN on Honda’s official recall webpage or contacting their local dealer. The recall covers vehicles sold in the following salt‑belt states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and several others where road‑salt use is common.

What dealers will do

Certified Honda and Acura dealers will inspect the rear‑frame sub‑structure for corrosion and apply a reinforced reinforcement kit. In severe cases, the entire sub‑frame may need to be replaced. All repairs are performed at no cost to the owner.

Honda’s recall history

This isn’t Honda’s first rust‑related recall. In 2023, the automaker recalled more than 560,000 CR‑V models (2007‑2011) for rear‑frame corrosion that could cause a longitudinal control arm to detach. A year earlier, over 112,000 Ridgeline trucks (2006‑2014) were recalled for rust that could compromise fuel‑tank mounting points, raising the risk of fuel leaks.

What you should do now

If you own one of the listed models, schedule a free inspection with your nearest Honda or Acura dealer as soon as possible. Acting promptly can prevent a dangerous suspension failure and keep you safely on the road.
