Driving on Vietnam’s high-speed expressways requires strict adherence to safety regulations. A recent case highlighted by the Traffic Police Department serves as a stark warning to motorists: a string of traffic violations on the Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway recently resulted in a staggering total fine of 118.5 million VND.

A ‘Combo’ of Traffic Violations

The incident began when a driver was flagged for speeding while traveling on the Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway. However, the speeding ticket was only the beginning. Upon further inspection, authorities discovered a series of critical legal failures regarding both the driver and the vehicle.

Investigations revealed that the driver was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license. Furthermore, the vehicle lacked a proper registration certificate. The car was registered under the name of a transport cooperative, HTX VC Xanh – CN HCM.

Breakdown of the Massive Penalties

Because the violations involved both the operator and the vehicle owner, the fines were split across two parties, with the heaviest penalties falling on the organization that provided the vehicle.

Penalties for the Vehicle Owner (HTX VC Xanh):

  • 58 million VND: For handing over a vehicle to a person who did not meet the legal requirements to operate it.
  • 34 million VND: For allowing an unregistered vehicle to participate in traffic.

Penalties for the Driver:

  • 19 million VND: For driving without a valid license.
  • 5 million VND: For exceeding the speed limit by 10-20 km/h (this also resulted in a 2-point deduction from their driving record).
  • 2.5 million VND: For operating a vehicle without a registration certificate.

In addition to the financial penalties, the authorities ordered the impoundment of the vehicle for seven days.

Increased Surveillance on Vietnam’s Expressways

The Traffic Police Department emphasized that the Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway is now equipped with advanced surveillance systems and speed cameras. These tools allow authorities to monitor traffic in real-time and pinpoint violations with high accuracy.

Tips for Safe Driving on Expressways:

To avoid heavy fines and ensure road safety, the authorities advise all drivers to:

  • Maintain Legal Speed Limits: Always follow the posted speed signs and adjust your speed based on weather and road conditions.
  • Verify Documentation: Ensure your driver’s license and vehicle registration are valid and present in the car.
  • Maintain Safe Distances: Keep a secure gap between your vehicle and the one in front to prevent accidents.

This case serves as a reminder that negligence—whether by the driver or the vehicle owner—can lead to severe financial consequences and legal trouble under Vietnam’s tightening traffic enforcement laws.
