Porsche faces a steep sales drop in Q1 2026 as the ICE Macan is phased out and EV demand cools. Discover what’s next for the luxury giant. Read more!

Porsche is currently navigating one of its most challenging periods in recent history. After a staggering 93% plunge in operating profits in 2025, the luxury German automaker has released its Q1 2026 results, revealing a further 15% drop in sales. The company delivered 60,991 vehicles this quarter, a significant dip from the 71,470 units sold during the same period last year.

The Perfect Storm: Product Cycles and EV Cooling

While some of this decline was anticipated—largely due to the sunsetting of the Porsche 718 (Cayman and Boxster) and a natural cooling period for the Macan Electric after its initial hype—a more systemic issue is emerging. The luxury brand is finding itself squeezed between a dying legacy and a slow-to-arrive future.

The Macan Dilemma: A ‘Golden Goose’ in Transition

The most concerning data point lies with the Macan, long considered Porsche’s most profitable model. In Q1 2026, Macan deliveries fell by 23%, totaling 18,209 units. A closer look at the numbers reveals a worrying trend:

  • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Macan: 10,130 units (still accounting for over half of sales).
  • Electric Macan: 8,079 units (a sharp 43% decline).

This puts Porsche in a precarious position. The combustion-powered Macan is scheduled for official retirement this summer, yet a fully redesigned replacement isn’t expected to hit the market for several years. Losing this sales pillar creates a massive revenue gap that will likely pressure total production in the short term.

Silver Linings: The 911 and Cayenne Hold the Line

It isn’t all bad news for Zuffenhausen. The Porsche 911 remains an untouchable icon, defying market trends with a 22% increase in sales, reaching 13,889 units. Meanwhile, the Cayenne has stepped up as the brand’s new volume leader, maintaining relative stability with 19,183 units (a minor 4% dip).

Widespread Struggles Across the Portfolio

Beyond the icons, the rest of the lineup is struggling to find footing. The electric Taycan saw a 19% drop (3,420 units), and the Panamera plummeted by 42% to just 4,498 units. This is partly attributed to generational transitions and a severe downturn in the Chinese market. The 718, now effectively at the end of its life, saw a collapse of 60% in sales, with only 1,792 units delivered.

Global Market Headwinds

Porsche’s struggles are mirrored across its key global territories:

  • North America: Still the largest market with 18,344 units, but down 11% due to shifting incentive policies and tariff pressures.
  • Europe: Excluding Germany, sales dropped 18% to 14,710 units.
  • Rest of World: A 20% decline, totaling 12,640 units.

China remains the most volatile region. Sales fell by 21% to 7,519 units as domestic luxury EV brands continue to eat away at Porsche’s market share. While Porsche claims to be prioritizing “value over volume” in China, the raw numbers suggest a clear retreat.

Looking Ahead: A Steep Climb to Recovery

Porsche’s official explanation regarding “product cycles” only tells part of the story. The reality is a combination of a cooling global EV market, fierce competition from agile Chinese manufacturers, and a risky transition period for the Macan. Until the brand can bridge the gap between its combustion legacy and its electric future, the coming quarters are likely to remain turbulent.
