The automotive world is witnessing a powerful resurgence of “retro-modern” styling, and Toyota is leading the charge. A Sensation in Thailand: Demand Outpaces Supply

Designed as the spiritual successor to the beloved FJ Cruiser (which ended production in 2022), the new Land Cruiser FJ has quickly become the centerpiece of Toyota’s exhibit. The response from the Thai market has been nothing short of explosive.

According to local reports, Toyota has already secured over 800 pre-orders for the Land Cruiser FJ, a figure that significantly exceeds the company’s initial sales projections for the first phase. Eager buyers won’t have to wait long, as the first deliveries are scheduled to begin around May 2026.

Vietnam Launch: What to Expect

The excitement isn’t limited to Thailand. In Vietnam, the buzz is already building. Insiders and sales consultants report that some customers have already begun placing deposits for the model. While official confirmation is pending, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to make its official debut in the Vietnamese market around June or July 2026.

Estimated pricing for the Vietnamese market is hovering around 1.198 billion VND. Because the vehicle is assembled at the TMT Ban Pho plant in Chachoengsao, Thailand, it is expected to benefit from favorable regional trade taxes, making it more competitively priced for Vietnamese consumers.

Performance and Specifications: Built for Adventure

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ isn’t just about looks; it’s engineered for genuine utility. The Thai-spec model features a robust powertrain designed for both city commuting and rugged trails:

  • Engine: 2.7L inline 4-cylinder
  • Performance: Maximum output of 166 hp and 245 Nm of torque
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic
  • Drive System: 4WD with a rear differential lock for superior off-road traction
  • Suspension: Double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs and a 4-link rear suspension system

Market Positioning: The Most Accessible Land Cruiser

If launched officially, the FJ will represent the most accessible entry point into the prestigious Land Cruiser family. For comparison, Toyota Vietnam currently offers the high-end Land Cruiser Prado (J250) and the flagship Land Cruiser (J300), priced at approximately 3.46 billion VND and 4.58 billion VND, respectively.

Land Cruiser FJ vs. Suzuki Jimny

The compact, retro off-roader segment previously saw a surge in popularity with the Suzuki Jimny. While the Jimny remains a cult favorite due to its diminutive size and affordability, the Land Cruiser FJ offers a more comprehensive package. Unlike the basic 3-door Jimny available in Vietnam, the FJ provides more interior space, enhanced luxury features, and a more powerful engine, positioning it as a more versatile daily driver and adventure vehicle.

With a starting price in Thailand of 1.269 million baht (approx. $38,700), the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is poised to redefine the compact SUV segment in Southeast Asia.
