Explore how Toyota’s Woven City integrates AI, flying taxis, and smart safety to redefine urban life. See the future of smart cities today!

Toyota is no longer just about cars; it is building the future of human habitation. The Toyota Group and Woven by Toyota (WbyT) have unveiled a suite of cutting-edge technologies set to power Woven City, a living laboratory for smart urbanism located in Koromo, Japan, which is scheduled to be fully operational by September 2025.

The ‘Kakezan’ Strategy: Blending Hardware and Software

To bridge the gap between Toyota’s legendary automotive heritage and the rapid evolution of software, the company has introduced the “Kakezan” strategy. This approach integrates Toyota’s industrial expertise with WbyT’s software capabilities and the creative input of various investors to create a seamless, AI-driven ecosystem.

The AI Vision Engine: A City That Thinks

At the heart of this metropolis is the AI Vision Engine, currently being piloted by partner UCC Japan. This large-scale foundation AI model allows Woven City to perceive, understand, and react to real-world conditions in real-time. By synthesizing data from cameras and mobile systems, the AI can identify patterns, detect potential risks, and coordinate city-wide responses to maximize safety and efficiency.

Redefining Urban Safety with Integrated ANZEN

Safety is the cornerstone of Woven City, manifested through the Woven City Integrated ANZEN system. This intelligent safety framework utilizes several innovative layers:

  • Behavior AI: Designed to interpret and predict human movement to prevent accidents before they happen.
  • Drive Sync Assist: A system that supports drivers by analyzing data from vehicles and traffic signals.
  • Unified Infrastructure: A network where pedestrians, vehicles, and city infrastructure operate as a single, synchronized entity to ensure absolute safety.

A Hub for Innovation: The Inventor Garage

To foster a culture of continuous improvement, Toyota launched the Inventor Garage this April. This facility provides a “closed-loop” development process, allowing inventors to move from rapid prototyping to real-world testing within the actual living environment of the city’s residents.

In a poetic nod to Toyota’s history, the Garage was repurposed from a 50-year-old stamping plant at the Higashi-Fuji factory, symbolizing the evolution from traditional manufacturing to digital innovation.

A Diverse Ecosystem of Future Tech

Woven City is attracting a diverse array of tech pioneers. While it began with around 20 smart investors, four new heavyweights have recently joined the project:

  • Joby Aviation: Bringing the possibility of flying taxis to urban transit.
  • AIRoA: Developing AI-integrated robotics for daily assistance.
  • Daiichikosho: Testing futuristic, smart karaoke models.
  • Toyota Financial Services: Researching new financial models tailored for smart city residents.

The Akio Toyoda AI: Digital Leadership

In a fascinating twist, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has introduced the Akio Toyoda AI. This specialized model is designed to study and replicate his unique leadership style, serving as a strategic tool to support corporate decision-making and management within the group.

Woven City is no longer just a conceptual drawing on a blueprint. It is rapidly transforming into a tangible reality—a place where the technologies of tomorrow are integrated into the fabric of daily life to enhance the human experience.
