VinFast dominates Vietnam’s automotive market with record EV sales, driving growth for traditional brands too. Explore the Q1 2026 trends!

The first quarter of 2026 has painted a clear picture of the Vietnamese automotive landscape: VinFast is no longer just a competitor—it is the dominant force. While the homegrown EV giant continues to lead the charge, a surprising trend is emerging: traditional legacy brands are also seeing a resurgence in sales.

VinFast: The Undisputed Leader in the EV Era

With a diverse product portfolio and strong consumer demand, VinFast has firmly established its grip on the market, outpacing established rivals from the US, South Korea, and Japan. In March alone, VinFast reported a staggering 27,609 electric vehicles (EVs) delivered, marking a 127% increase compared to the same period last year.

The cumulative figures for the first three months are even more impressive. VinFast has successfully delivered 53,684 electric cars to customers. A significant driver of this success has been the Limo Green model, which has become a primary revenue generator with 12,471 units sold in Q1.

Currently, VinFast’s EV lineup accounts for approximately 33.13% of the total new car market in Vietnam, signaling a massive shift in consumer preference toward sustainable mobility.

The Competitive Landscape: VAMA and Traditional Giants

According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the broader market remains active. In March, VAMA members saw total consumption of 38,704 vehicles. For the first quarter of 2026, VAMA members’ total sales reached 94,857 units, representing a 58.54% market share.

When drilling down into passenger cars, VinFast’s lead is substantial. The brand’s total volume exceeds the combined sales of its four closest competitors:

  • Toyota: 16,885 units
  • Mitsubishi: 11,909 units
  • Ford: 11,104 units
  • Hyundai: 10,195 passenger units

Other brands like Mazda (8,101 units), Kia (8,076 units), and Honda (5,603 units) followed, while Suzuki and Isuzu remained at the bottom of the passenger car rankings, as both brands continue to focus heavily on the commercial vehicle segment.

A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats

Interestingly, VinFast’s dominance does not seem to be cannibalizing the sales of other brands. Instead, it appears to be acting as a catalyst for the entire industry. When comparing Q1 2026 to Q1 2025, almost every major player recorded positive growth:

  • Toyota grew from 11,830 to 16,885 units.
  • Mitsubishi jumped from 7,920 to 11,909 units.
  • Ford increased from 8,098 to 11,104 units.
  • Hyundai saw passenger car sales rise from 8,838 to 10,195 units.

Even the VAMA group as a whole saw a “hot” growth spurt, with sales climbing 31% from 72,249 units in Q1 2025 to 98,857 units in Q1 2026.

Final Outlook

As the first quarter of 2026 closes, the hierarchy of the Vietnamese car market remains stable, with VinFast maintaining the “dominant” position it has held since 2024. However, the overall scale of the market has expanded significantly.

The surge in VinFast’s success is not just a win for the company, but a sign of a maturing market where increased competition and a shift toward electrification are driving overall demand and growth for all automotive stakeholders in Vietnam.
