When Audi unveiled the latest RS5 Avant, the headline‑grabbing figure wasn’t the power output or zero‑to‑60 time—it was the weight. The performance wagon now tips the scales at roughly 2,300 kg, a jump of about 625 kg compared with the previous generation.

Regulatory Pressure Fuels the Weight Gain

European emissions standards are tightening faster than ever. With the EU pushing for a 55% cut in CO₂ by 2030 and aiming for a 90% reduction versus 2021 levels, manufacturers are forced to rethink pure‑internal‑combustion architectures. The result? More plug‑in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) configurations, even on models that traditionally relied on large displacement V‑engines.

Why Audi Chose a PHEV Over a Smaller Engine

Dropping the 2.9‑litre V6 for a smaller four‑cylinder would shave weight, but it would also compromise the RS5’s signature character. The recent fate of the Mercedes‑AMG C 63, which switched to a four‑cylinder before being discontinued, shows how a loss of engine identity can alienate the core buyer.

Sticking with the V6 while adding an electrified powertrain lets Audi keep the model’s performance DNA alive. In theory the extra weight could be mitigated with more aluminium and carbon‑fibre, yet doing so would push the price well beyond the reach of most enthusiasts.

Emission Gains on Paper, Not Always in Practice

On the official WLTP cycle the RS5 PHEV records a combined CO₂ output of just 88 g/km—dramatically lower than the older RS4 Avant’s 219 g/km. Fuel consumption also looks impressive: 3.9 L/100 km when the 22 kWh lithium‑ion battery is fully charged, versus 9.7 L/100 km for the RS4.

However, those numbers presuppose a constantly topped‑up battery. When the electric range is depleted, the RS5’s fuel use spikes to roughly 9.6 L/100 km, despite the extra mass.

Future Regulations: Euro 7 and the End of Large Engines

Euro 7, set to roll out in November 2026, will tighten real‑world emission testing (RDE) and even account for tyre and brake wear. The stricter regime is expected to be the last hurdle before full electric becomes mandatory in Europe later this century.

Audi has already hinted that Euro 7 could spell the death of its inline‑five engines. While a turbocharged 2.5 L could technically meet the new limits, the development cost versus expected sales volume—especially for models like the RS3—doesn’t make financial sense.

What This Means for Buyers and the Industry

For performance enthusiasts, the trade‑off is clear: keep the exhilarating V6 feel and accept a heavier, pricier car that relies on a sizable battery, or move to smaller, lighter engines with reduced performance pedigree. Automakers, meanwhile, must balance regulatory compliance, brand identity, and profitability in an era where electrification is no longer optional.

Whether the added weight of the Audi RS5 PHEV will be a deal‑breaker remains to be seen, but it undeniably signals a broader shift—high‑performance machines are getting heavier, and the road ahead is increasingly electric.
