Chinese EV maker BYD has begun live trials of its next‑generation ultra‑fast charging network in Shenzhen. The goal? To make plugging in an electric car as quick and familiar as pulling into a gasoline pump.

Design Inspired by Fuel Stations

Instead of solitary, ground‑level charging pillars, the new stations feature a large overhead canopy with a T‑shaped hanging charger. Cables descend from above, allowing drivers to plug in from any angle without wrestling heavy cords across the pavement. The setup keeps the equipment clean and reduces wear on the charging connector.

Megawatt Power – 1,500 kW

Each charger integrates liquid‑cooled guns that can handle an unprecedented 1,500 kW of power, a record for public EV stations. At that rate, a compatible BYD model can gain roughly 400 km (250 miles) of range in about five minutes – essentially the same time it takes to fill a gasoline tank.

Who Can Use the Flash Charge?

During the trial, access is limited to BYD’s newest “Flash Charge” badge models, including the Tang 9, Song Ultra, Seal 07, Denza Z9 GT and the FCB Tai‑series. These vehicles are engineered to accept input power above 1,000 kW, a prerequisite for the megawatt chargers.

Safety and Grid Management

  • Charging automatically stops at 97 % state‑of‑charge to protect battery longevity and avoid overheating.
  • Each station is paired with a battery‑buffer system that stores energy and releases it instantly when multiple cars charge simultaneously, helping keep the grid stable.

Roadmap to Global Rollout

After completing internal testing, BYD plans to roll out the Flash Charge network across major Chinese cities and selected international markets by 2026. By mimicking the look and convenience of traditional fuel stations, BYD hopes to sway drivers who are still hesitant about switching to electric.
