The Mercedes-Benz SL is getting a major mid-cycle refresh with a bold new engine lineup and sleek design tweaks. See what’s changing!
The Mercedes-Benz SL has always been the gold standard for luxury roadsters, balancing raw performance with sophisticated comfort. Now, the legendary open-top tourer is preparing for a significant mid-cycle refresh that promises to sharpen its looks and seriously boost its powertrain.

Sleek Exterior Refinements
While Mercedes-Benz is sticking to its iconic two-door roadster proportions, the upcoming SL facelift will introduce subtle yet impactful design tweaks. Rather than a complete overhaul, the brand is focusing on modern accents to keep the SL looking fresh.
Expect a redesigned front fascia featuring new LED headlights. The highlight will be the daytime running lights, which are rumored to incorporate a star-shaped motif—a signature nod to the Three-Pointed Star. According to the latest renders, this starry theme will likely extend to the rear of the vehicle as well.

Further aesthetic changes include a smoother, more rounded headlight housing, replacing the current sharp triangular design. A new matte black trim will likely connect the headlights to a revised vertical-slat grille, elegantly framed in chrome. While spy shots show existing taillights, industry insiders expect a final production version inspired by the sleek LED signatures found on the latest S-Class.
A Digital Leap with MB.OS
Inside the cabin, the biggest upgrade isn’t just visual—it’s digital. The refreshed SL will debut the new MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System). This unified platform merges infotainment, driver assistance, and core vehicle functions into one seamless ecosystem, featuring Over-the-Air (OTA) update capabilities to ensure the car evolves long after it leaves the showroom.

Under the Hood: A Major Powertrain Shift
The most dramatic changes are happening beneath the hood. To meet the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards, Mercedes-Benz is rethinking the SL’s engine architecture.
The V8 Evolution
All V8 variants will transition to a new 4.0L twin-turbo engine featuring a flat-plane crankshaft, similar to the tech introduced in the S-Class. While this might slightly alter the legendary deep growl of the traditional cross-plane V8, it is a necessary trade-off for increased power and environmental compliance.
- SL 55 AMG: Expected to deliver 537 hp, with an additional 23 hp provided by the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).
- SL 63 AMG: The powerhouse of the range is projected to reach a staggering 650 hp.
The End of the 4-Cylinder Era
In a bold move, the base SL 43—powered by the 2.0L M139 4-cylinder engine—is being retired as it cannot meet Euro 7 standards. In its place, Mercedes will introduce a 3.0L inline-6 engine, pushing the entry-level performance significantly higher.
This new base engine will produce approximately 449 hp, plus 23 hp from the ISG. Beyond the power bump, this shift brings an upgrade in drivetrain: moving from rear-wheel drive to 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. Consequently, the base model is expected to be rebranded as the SL 53 AMG 4MATIC+.
When Can You Expect It?
The automotive world is eagerly awaiting the official reveal. Reports suggest that the updated Mercedes-Benz SL will make its debut toward the end of this year, with market availability beginning in 2027.
