Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2026 EQS for the European market, bringing a sweeping series of upgrades to its flagship electric sedan. This isn’t just a minor facelift; it is a comprehensive evolution designed to solidify the EQS’s position at the pinnacle of luxury EV technology.

Revolutionary Steering and Handling

The most headline-grabbing update for the 2026 EQS is the introduction of steer-by-wire technology. Following the lead of pioneers like Tesla and Lexus, Mercedes has decoupled the steering wheel from the front wheels, replacing mechanical linkages with electronic signals.

At low speeds, the steering ratio is set to 4:1, allowing drivers to navigate tight corners and parking spaces with minimal effort and fewer turns of the wheel. For those who prefer a traditional feel, Mercedes continues to offer a conventional mechanical steering system as an option. Additionally, the air suspension system has been meticulously refined to provide an even smoother, cloud-like ride.

A Modernized Exterior Aesthetic

Visually, the 2026 EQS distinguishes itself with a refreshed front fascia. The redesigned grille now features a striking black finish adorned with dozens of miniature three-pointed stars, creating a sophisticated, jewelry-like effect. Complementing this look are new LED headlights featuring signature star-shaped daytime running lights, giving the sedan a sharper, more futuristic gaze.

Next-Gen Interior and Digital Experience

Inside, the cabin remains a sanctuary of luxury, though it has been infused with the latest intelligence. The vehicle now runs on the cutting-edge MB.OS operating system and the intuitive MBUX virtual assistant.

While the iconic Hyperscreen—comprising a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 17.7-inch central touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display—remains the center of attention, the rear passengers now get a significant upgrade with two new 13.1-inch entertainment touchscreens.

Power, Battery, and Ultra-Fast Charging

The 2026 lineup is divided into four distinct versions: the EQS 400, EQS 450+, EQS 500 4Matic, and EQS 580 4Matic. The most significant technical leap is the shift to an 800V electrical architecture for the three top-tier models.

  • High-End Models (450+, 500, 580): Equipped with a massive 122 kWh battery and 800V architecture, these models now support DC fast charging up to 350 kW. Even at 400V charging stations, the system intelligently manages power to maintain speeds up to 175 kW.
  • Entry-Level Model (EQS 400): This version retains the 400V platform with a 112 kWh battery, supporting DC fast charging up to 330 kW.

All variants come with a standard 11 kW onboard charger, with an optional upgrade to 22 kW available for those seeking faster home charging.

Performance and Engineering

New electric motors have been integrated across the entire range to boost efficiency and power:

  • EQS 400: Delivers a respectable 362 horsepower.
  • EQS 500 4Matic: Steps up to 469 horsepower.
  • EQS 580 4Matic: The powerhouse of the group, producing 577 horsepower and a staggering 800 Nm of torque.

Interestingly, all versions feature a two-speed gearbox. The first gear is optimized for rapid off-the-line acceleration, while the second gear maximizes energy efficiency during high-speed cruising.

Pricing and Availability

The 2026 Mercedes EQS will debut first in Europe, with pricing ranging from $111,000 to $158,500, depending on the configuration and trim level.
