The budget A-segment gasoline car market in Vietnam has become a battlefield of attrition. Once a crowded space, it is now dominated by a few key players. The Toyota Wigo stands as the sole Japanese representative in this category, fighting for market share against Korean rivals like the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Morning.

A Rocky Road to Recovery

The Toyota Wigo has had a turbulent history in the Vietnamese market. After being quietly withdrawn in late 2022, the hatchback made a high-profile comeback in June 2023. With a fresh look and several notable upgrades, Toyota hoped the Indonesian-imported model would regain momentum, especially after the exit of the VinFast Fadil.

However, the “glow-up” hasn’t translated into dominant sales. While the Wigo saw a slight bump in 2024, the numbers tell a story of struggling demand:

  • 2023: 1,748 units sold
  • 2024: 2,659 units sold
  • 2025: 2,395 units sold

The Sudden Sales Crash of 2026

Entering 2026, the Toyota Wigo experienced a sudden and dramatic decline. Data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) reveals a “free fall” in sales during the first quarter. The numbers plummeted from 163 units in January to just 35 in February, and a staggering 2 units in March.

In stark contrast, the Hyundai Grand i10 continues to thrive, maintaining a strong presence with thousands of units sold annually and consistently outperforming the Wigo in the early months of 2026.

The Root Cause: Logistics, Not Lack of Interest?

While the numbers look grim, the decline isn’t necessarily due to a lack of buyer interest. Inside information reveals that Toyota Vietnam (TMV) has issued formal apologies to its dealership network regarding significant delivery delays.

According to TMV, the bottleneck stems from registration procedure complications, which disrupted the planned delivery window of February through May 2026. With deliveries now expected to resume only in late June or early July, the Wigo is facing a precarious period of “zero sales” for the April and May reporting cycles.

Market Sentiment: A Niche Player in a Tight Market

Interestingly, the delivery crisis hasn’t caused panic among dealers. A sales consultant in Ho Chi Minh City noted that because the Wigo is not a “high-demand” model, the delay hasn’t significantly disrupted business operations.

Challenges to Competitiveness

Industry analysts suggest that the Wigo’s lack of competitiveness stems from a limited product lineup. Currently, only the G variant is available in Vietnam, priced at approximately 405 million VND. The more affordable manual transmission version, which previously retailed for 360 million VND, was removed from the catalog in early 2025.

By stripping away the entry-level option and facing logistics hurdles, Toyota may find it increasingly difficult to challenge the dominance of Korean budget cars in the Vietnamese urban landscape.
