BMW is preparing to redefine the luxury electric sedan segment once again. The automotive giant is set to unveil the 2027 BMW i7 at the Beijing Auto Show on April 22, marking a significant mid-cycle refresh that places a heavy emphasis on next-generation technology and efficiency.

The Rimac Partnership: A Battery Breakthrough

The centerpiece of the 2027 i7 update is a sophisticated new battery pack developed in collaboration with Rimac Technology. While Rimac’s automotive division has merged with Bugatti, the technology arm remains independent, allowing it to bring hypercar-level innovation to BMW’s luxury fleet.

The new i7 will integrate Rimac’s latest Gen6 cylindrical cells into BMW’s existing Gen5 modular design. This transition from the previous prismatic cells is a game-changer, delivering a 20% increase in volumetric energy density. This means more power and efficiency without increasing the physical size of the battery pack.

Extended Range and Rapid Charging

For the luxury traveler, this technological leap translates directly into performance. The update is expected to push the i7’s range beyond its current maximum of 624 km (approximately 388 miles).

Charging speeds are also seeing a significant boost. The 2027 model will support DC fast charging starting at 195 kW. However, industry insiders are closely watching to see if BMW will implement the 800V electrical architecture found in the iX3 and i3, which could potentially unlock blistering charging speeds of up to 400 kW. To ensure peak quality, these batteries will be assembled in Croatia before being shipped to BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany for final vehicle assembly.

A Futuristic Interior Experience

The 2027 i7 doesn’t just evolve under the hood; it transforms inside. Drawing inspiration from the iX3 and i3, the luxury sedan will feature a revamped cabin designed for the digital age. Highlights include:

  • iDrive Panoramic Display: A massive, seamless screen that stretches across the entire dashboard, providing an immersive cockpit experience.
  • Parallelogram Entertainment Screen: A unique, high-resolution display dedicated to rear-seat passengers, ensuring first-class entertainment.

The G70 Series 7 Family: Versatility in Power

The i7 remains the electric crown jewel of the G70 Series 7 lineup, but BMW continues to offer versatility for different driver preferences. Prospective buyers can choose from a variety of powertrains:

  • Electric (i7): Equipped with a massive 112.5 kWh battery for long-distance sustainable luxury.
  • Inline-6 Gasoline: A 3.0-liter engine available in two outputs—285 hp and 399 hp.
  • V8 Engine: For those seeking maximum traditional power and prestige.

The 2027 BMW i7 will be a star attraction at the Beijing Auto Show, which runs from April 24 to May 3, signaling BMW’s commitment to leading the global transition toward high-performance electric luxury.
