BMW introduces the Figure 03 humanoid robot at its Spartanburg plant to boost logistics, safety and efficiency. Discover how AI is reshaping manufacturing today!

BMW is accelerating its Physical AI initiative by deploying a next‑generation humanoid robot, called Figure 03, at the company’s Spartanburg, South Carolina factory. The robot is designed to handle logistics tasks, streamline parts handling, and support assembly‑line workers.

From Figure 02 to Figure 03: A Leap in Capability
Earlier this year, the predecessor Figure 02 helped produce more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles in just ten months, feeding metal components into the body‑welding stage. Building on that success, Figure 03 adds a suite of advanced features:

- Tactile sensors on its hands for delicate part manipulation.
- A camera embedded in the palm to verify part orientation.
- Wireless charging for continuous operation.
- Voice‑controlled communication, enabling natural interaction with human colleagues.
How Figure 03 Works on the Shop Floor
In the new workflow, Figure 03 is assigned to retrieve components from large storage bins, place them onto specialized carts, and deliver the carts to the appropriate assembly stations. By automating these repetitive and physically demanding steps, the robot reduces the risk of worker injury and frees up staff to focus on higher‑value tasks such as quality inspection and problem solving.

Part of BMW’s iFACTORY Vision
The deployment is a core element of BMW’s iFACTORY strategy, which blends artificial intelligence, digital twins, and advanced automation to create a smarter, more flexible manufacturing environment. BMW expects that humanoid robots like Figure 03 will not only increase throughput but also improve the overall work atmosphere for employees.

What This Means for the Future of Manufacturing
As the automotive industry embraces more collaborative robots, BMW’s move signals a broader shift toward human‑robot teaming. The company plans to expand the use of humanoid robots across other plants worldwide, aiming for greater efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

Stay tuned for updates on how Figure 03 and future AI‑driven solutions continue to transform the way cars are built.
