Chinese automaker BYD has officially unveiled the European‑specific version of its Dolphin plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) hatchback. The model, slated for a formal price reveal in June, marks BYD’s first vehicle designed expressly for the European market and will be built at the company’s new plant in Szeged, Hungary.
Sharp New Design for Europe
The European Dolphin PHEV arrives in a distinctive orange‑tinted paint finish. Measuring 4,160 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width, it is 130 mm shorter but 55 mm wider than the pure‑electric Dolphin already on sale in China. The styling language stays true to its predecessor while adopting a more aggressive front end: a slim LED headlamp cluster, an active grille with two aerodynamic air intakes, and a sculpted bumper that emphasizes motion.

Exterior highlights include black‑painted alloy wheels, semi‑concealed door handles, and a dark‑tinted roof pillar that creates a floating‑roof effect. A 360° camera system and front‑and‑rear parking sensors round out the driver‑assist suite.
Tech‑Focused Interior
Inside, the cabin is dominated by a sleek black theme. A floating central touchscreen sits atop a clean dashboard, while the seat headrests feature a subtle embroidered “G” logo, echoing BYD’s DM‑i hybrid branding.
Powertrain and Performance
Although BYD has not disclosed every technical detail, the Dolphin PHEV is expected to share its drivetrain architecture with the globally‑sold Atto 2 DM‑i. The power unit pairs a naturally aspirated 1.5‑litre gasoline engine (97 hp) with a robust electric motor delivering 194 hp, resulting in a combined output of roughly 209 hp.

Battery Options and Driving Range
Buyers can choose between two lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) battery packs: a 7.8 kWh unit for short city trips and an 18 kWh pack that extends pure‑electric range to 40–90 km (WLTP). Thanks to the hybrid system, total achievable distance tops out at around 1,000 km on a single tank and charge.
Production in Hungary and Export Push
The Dolphin PHEV will be the first BYD model rolled out from the Szeged factory, underscoring the company’s strategy to boost exports and offset a slowdown in its domestic market. In April 2026, BYD delivered 149,606 vehicles in China—a 38.5% year‑on‑year drop—but global sales still hit 314,100 units, buoyed by 135,098 exported cars, a 70.8% increase from the previous year.
What’s Next?
Full specifications, pricing and trim details are expected at the official launch event in June. The Dolphin PHEV could become one of the first BYD models to reach European showrooms directly from the Hungarian plant, positioning the brand as a serious contender in the continent’s rapidly expanding plug‑in hybrid segment.
