Chinese automaker BYD has taken a bold step onto the global stage by launching its ultra‑fast Flash Charging network outside China, with the first stations rolling out in the United Kingdom and across Europe. The new sites boast a staggering 1.5 MW (1,500 kW) power output – roughly three times the capacity of Tesla’s latest V4 Supercharger stations.
How Flash Charging Works
The system relies on on‑site energy storage batteries that are charged from the grid during off‑peak hours. This approach cuts operating costs and eases pressure on local power networks, while delivering a near‑instant refuel experience comparable to filling a gasoline tank.
Compatibility and Performance
All electric vehicles that support the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard can plug into BYD’s Flash Chargers. However, only models equipped with BYD’s next‑generation Blade battery – such as the premium Denza Z9 GT – can fully tap the 1.5 MW capacity.
According to BYD, the Blade‑battery cars can charge from 10 % to 70 % in about 5 minutes, and from 10 % to 97 % in roughly 9 minutes. Even in extreme cold (‑30 °C), the additional charging time is only a few extra minutes.
First Model on the Market
The Denza Z9 GT, BYD’s high‑end brand, is the inaugural vehicle to offer this capability in Europe, with pre‑orders opening at a starting price of $134,500. The model’s launch is being hailed by BYD’s Executive Vice‑President Stella Li as a milestone in the company’s global expansion.
