BYD unveils the 3,000hp Yangwang U9 Xtreme, hitting nearly 500 km/h. Discover the $2.9M electric beast breaking records. Explore the specs here!
At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu marked a historic milestone for the company by personally handing over the keys of the first Yangwang U9 Xtreme. This isn’t just another electric vehicle; it is a statement of engineering dominance, claimed by the manufacturer to be the fastest production car in the world.
Exclusive Ownership and a Staggering Price Tag
The first lucky owner of this automotive marvel is Nick Politis, a Greek-Australian billionaire and chairman of the Sydney Roosters rugby league club. The transaction, valued at over 20 million yuan (approximately $2.9 million), makes the U9 Xtreme the most expensive vehicle showcased at this year’s exhibition and the priciest product BYD has ever produced.

Exclusivity is the core of the Xtreme edition. With only 30 units available globally, each market is allocated a maximum of one vehicle. Interestingly, all units are right-hand drive. Politis noted that his acquisition serves as a high-profile promotional tool for BYD’s dealership network in Australia, navigating the country’s stringent registration laws for right-hand drive imports.
Performance That Defies Logic
While the standard Yangwang U9 is already impressive at $264,000, the Xtreme version costs roughly 11 times more. This price jump reflects a leap in performance that puts BYD in direct competition with legendary hypercar brands like Bugatti and Pagani.
Breaking the 500 km/h Barrier
The U9 Xtreme’s capabilities were proven on the Papenburg test track in Germany. Driven by Marc Basseng, the hypercar clocked a staggering top speed of 496.22 km/h, surpassing every commercial vehicle ever produced, regardless of whether it uses an electric motor or an internal combustion engine.

Conquering the Nürburgring
Beyond top speed, the U9 Xtreme has mastered the world’s most demanding circuit. On August 22, 2025, driver Moritz Kranz completed a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds. This achievement makes it the first commercial electric vehicle to break the 7-minute barrier, shaving over five seconds off the time set by the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.
Engineering the Impossible: Under the Hood
To achieve these mind-bending figures, BYD equipped the U9 Xtreme with cutting-edge technology:
- Powertrain: An e4 four-motor drive system (Yi Sifang), with each motor delivering 555 kW and spinning at 30,000 rpm, resulting in a combined output of 2,220 kW (roughly 3,000 horsepower).
- Electrical Architecture: A state-of-the-art 1,200V platform utilizing silicon carbide materials and LFP batteries—a first for mass-produced vehicles.
- Braking & Handling: Carbon-ceramic brakes reinforced with titanium alloy ensure rapid deceleration, while the DiSus-X active suspension adjusts force per wheel with a response speed of 500 mm per second.
A Symbolic Victory for BYD
Dressed in a striking black-and-gold livery with a massive rear wing, the U9 Xtreme is more than just a car; it is a technological totem. While BYD does not intend to generate massive sales volume from this limited run, the U9 Xtreme serves to elevate the Yangwang brand to the same prestige as European hypercar elites.
The automotive world now waits to see where the remaining 29 units will land and whether they will be delivered in the public eye or kept in the private collections of the world’s most elite enthusiasts.
