Vietnam’s traffic police in Bac Ninh province have successfully tracked down a driver who fitted a counterfeit license plate onto a brand‑new VinFast VF6, then repeatedly ran red lights and exceeded speed limits on several major routes.
How the violation was detected
On 21 March, the province’s surveillance system flagged a VinFast VF6 cruising at high speed on National Highway 1A with the plate 98E‑010.xx. Cross‑checking revealed that this number had previously been assigned to a Toyota Wigo that had been transferred to a new owner and officially withdrawn from circulation.

Three‑month investigation
Using AI‑powered traffic cameras, officers followed the vehicle’s movements across multiple intersections. The same car was recorded running red lights and appearing on several road segments throughout Bac Ninh. After a thorough three‑month chase, the police intercepted the VF6 at kilometre 111+600 on Highway 1A on the morning of 21 June.
Driver confession
When questioned, the driver admitted that after selling his Toyota Wigo he ordered a duplicate plate with the number 98E‑010.xx from an online source and affixed it to his VinFast VF6 to evade detection. The vehicle is actually registered under a different, legitimate plate.
Legal consequences
According to Article 13, Clause 8 of Decree No. 168, using a plate that does not match the vehicle’s registration or that was not issued by the competent authority carries a fine of VND 20‑26 million, a deduction of 10 driving‑license points, and confiscation of the illegal plates.

Because the driver also committed speeding and red‑light violations, additional penalties apply:
- Speeding: fine of up to VND 12‑14 million and a loss of up to 6 licence points.
- Running a red light: fine of VND 18‑20 million and a deduction of 4 licence points.
Why AI cameras matter
This case underscores the growing role of artificial‑intelligence traffic monitoring in Vietnam. AI cameras can quickly spot anomalies—such as mismatched plate numbers—and provide authorities with real‑time data to enforce road safety laws more effectively.
Drivers are reminded that tampering with vehicle registration, exceeding speed limits, or ignoring traffic signals not only endangers public safety but also carries steep financial and licensing penalties.
