A catastrophic railway accident at the Bekasi Timur station in Indonesia has left at least 14 people dead and more than 80 injured. The incident, which occurred on the evening of April 27, has sparked a nationwide conversation regarding railway safety and infrastructure vulnerabilities.
The Deadly Chain Reaction
While the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is still finalizing its official report, early details provided by Bobby Rasyidin, CEO of the Indonesian National Railway Company (PT KAI), paint a grim picture of a chain-reaction disaster.
The chaos began when a green electric taxi became stranded at the JPL 85 crossing near the Bekasi Timur station. A KRL commuter train bound for Jakarta collided with the stalled vehicle, bringing the train to a halt.
In the aftermath of the first impact, another KRL train heading toward Cikarang stopped on an adjacent track to wait for the wreckage to be cleared. However, the Argo Bromo Anggrek passenger train, traveling from behind, slammed into the stationary Cikarang train, resulting in a massive collision and severe casualties.
Green SM Indonesia Responds
Local media have identified the stranded vehicle as belonging to Green SM Indonesia. Following the tragedy, the company issued a public statement via Facebook and Instagram on April 28, emphasizing their cooperation with the authorities.
“We have provided all relevant information and fully support the ongoing investigation. Safety and transparency remain the top priorities for Green SM,” the company stated, adding that they would provide further updates once the data is verified.
Eyewitness Accounts: A Moment of Panic
Witnesses at the scene described a desperate attempt to prevent the disaster. A local food vendor, positioned about 50 meters from the site, recounted seeing the Green SM taxi stop abruptly in the middle of the tracks. Despite loud warnings from the crossing guard and the approach of the Jakarta-bound train, the taxi remained immobile.
“They tried to push the car, but the taxi wouldn’t budge,” the witness recalled. Another observer reported hearing the screeching of brakes just before the impact, but the train—traveling at an estimated 60-70 km/h—could not stop in time.
Infrastructure Under Scrutiny
The accident has highlighted critical flaws in the local railway infrastructure. The JPL 85 crossing is a manual junction, lacking automatic barriers or modern signal warning systems. Safety at this location depends entirely on the vigilance of the crossing guard and the awareness of drivers.
This reliance on manual operation creates a high-risk environment. Experts suggest that without an integrated warning system that can alert train operators in real-time when a vehicle is stalled on the tracks, similar tragedies could occur.
