Explore the updated Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS featuring powerful new MHEV/PHEV engines, AI-tech, and luxury interiors. See what’s new!
Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled a comprehensive series of mid-cycle updates for its flagship SUV lineup, introducing refreshed versions of the GLE, GLE Coupe, GLE 53, and GLS. This isn’t just a cosmetic facelift; the GLE, in particular, has undergone a massive overhaul involving approximately 3,000 new or optimized components to enhance performance, efficiency, and luxury.
Powerful New Engine Options for the GLE
The updated GLE offers a versatile range of four powertrain options, catering to everything from efficiency-minded commuters to performance enthusiasts:
- 2.0L 4-Cylinder MHEV: An upgraded mild-hybrid producing 255 hp and 400 Nm of torque.
- 3.0L 6-Cylinder MHEV: A potent mid-range option delivering 375 hp and 560 Nm of torque.
- 4.0L V8 Twin-Turbo MHEV: The powerhouse of the range, featuring a flat-plane crankshaft, 530 hp, and 750 Nm of torque. This beast rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds.
- 3.0L 6-Cylinder PHEV: A plug-in hybrid combining a combustion engine with an electric motor for a combined 429 hp and 680 Nm. It hits 100 km/h in 5 seconds and offers an impressive pure-electric range of 106 km (WLTP).
Performance-Driven Variants: GLE Coupe and GLE 53 Hybrid
The GLE Coupe remains focused on sportiness, utilizing the 3.0L 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. However, the real star is the GLE 53 Hybrid. This performance-oriented model pairs a newly optimized 3.0L 6-cylinder engine with a 181 hp electric motor, resulting in a staggering total output of 577 hp and 750 Nm.
With a top speed of 250 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.4 seconds, the GLE 53 is as fast as it is luxurious. Owners can also enjoy rapid charging, with a 10-80% battery top-up taking only 20 minutes via a 60 kW DC fast charger.
The GLS: Uncompromised Grandeur
The GLS continues to lead the luxury SUV segment with two refined engine choices: the GLS 450 (3.0L 6-cylinder) and the GLS 580 (4.0L V8 Twin-Turbo), ensuring that the largest member of the family doesn’t compromise on power.
Modernized Design and High-Tech Interiors
Visually, the GLE takes a bold step forward with a larger grille, optional illuminated logos, and star-shaped LED daytime running lights. The rear is characterized by slimmer taillights featuring a 3D star motif, connected by a sophisticated black trim and chrome accent.
The GLS mirrors these design cues but maintains a more commanding presence with larger headlights and taillights inspired by the sleek E-Class.
A Digital Sanctuary
Inside, both the GLE and GLS embrace the future with the MBUX Superscreen—a stunning trio of 12.3-inch displays. This technological leap required a complete redesign of the dashboard and air vents. A new three-spoke steering wheel with capacitive touch buttons (similar to the new E-Class) adds to the modern feel.
Customization is key, with interior trim options including:
- Dark brown birch wood
- Classic brown walnut
- High-gloss aluminum
On the outside, new metallic red and deep blue paint options complement the four new 20-inch alloy wheel designs.
Cutting-Edge Intelligence and Safety
The updated lineup is powered by the latest MBUX operating system, now integrated with Artificial Intelligence for a more intuitive user experience, alongside a premium Burmester 3D surround sound system.
Safety is elevated via MB.Drive Assist Pro, enabling Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving. This system allows for hands-free navigation in city environments, providing a smoother and safer urban commute.
Cloud-Based Comfort in the GLS
The GLS introduces a groundbreaking cloud-based air suspension system. By scanning the road 1,000 times per second and uploading that data to the cloud, the vehicle can “learn” from other Mercedes-Benz cars. If another vehicle hits a pothole, the GLS will automatically adjust its suspension stiffness before it even reaches that same spot, ensuring a magic-carpet ride.
Pricing and official release dates for the updated GLE and GLS are expected to be announced shortly.
