Tesla has secured regulatory clearance to offer its supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in Belgium, marking the fifth EU nation to adopt the technology. Learn how this expands Tesla’s European footprint.
American electric‑vehicle maker Tesla has received official permission to roll out its supervised Full Self‑Driving (FSD) software in Belgium, opening the door to one of Europe’s key automotive markets.
Official confirmation
The announcement was confirmed by Annick De Ridder, the Flemish Minister of Mobility, who shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) and posted the signed approval document.

What the licence entails
Belgian regulators granted Tesla the licence after the company successfully completed a series of rigorous tests of its FSD system on local roads. The approval allows Tesla to offer the advanced driver‑assistance suite to customers across the country, but the technology remains a “driver‑monitored” system. Drivers must keep their hands on the wheel and be ready to intervene at any moment.
How FSD works
Tesla’s FSD combines a network of cameras, high‑performance onboard computers and artificial‑intelligence software to handle tasks such as lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, traffic‑sign recognition and complex urban navigation. While branded “Full Self‑Driving,” the system is still classified as Level 2 automation under current safety standards.
National coverage from a regional licence
Belgium’s unique regulatory framework means that a licence issued in one of its three regions – Flanders, Wallonia or Brussels – is valid nationwide. Consequently, Tesla can activate FSD for all Belgian drivers once the final paperwork is completed.

Growing European footprint
With Belgium’s approval, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia and Denmark become the first four EU members to allow Tesla’s supervised FSD. Belgium is now the fifth, highlighting the company’s steady push to bring its autonomous‑driving technology to European streets.
Looking ahead
Despite the green light, the rollout will still be subject to ongoing safety regulations, driver‑responsibility laws and broader EU guidelines on road‑based automation. Tesla says it will continue working closely with authorities to ensure a safe and compliant deployment.
