Toyota is reportedly preparing to make a strategic comeback in the Indian market with a bold twist: a 7-seater version of the popular Corolla Cross. Codenamed internally as Project 340D, this new SUV is expected to hit showrooms around 2028-2029, marking a pivotal shift in Toyota’s regional product strategy.
Filling the Gap in the SUV Lineup
For some time, Toyota has faced a significant void in its Indian portfolio. Currently, there is a wide pricing gap between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder (starting around $21,500) and the rugged Fortuner (starting around $37,600). The 7-seater Corolla Cross is designed specifically to bridge this divide, offering a premium yet accessible family vehicle.
By positioning this model in the mid-range segment, Toyota aims to compete directly with established local heavyweights such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Tata Safari, both of which have seen immense success with Indian families.
Engineering a Family-First Experience
The standard Corolla Cross sold globally is a 5-seater. To transform it into a viable 7-seater, Toyota’s engineers are facing a significant technical challenge: increasing the vehicle’s footprint. Reports indicate that the wheelbase will be extended by approximately 150 mm.
This additional length is crucial to accommodate a functional third row of seats while ensuring that passengers in the second row still have ample legroom.
