Honda is set to unveil the 2026 model of its popular Civic line in Thailand this July, and the spotlight is on the new e:HEV RS hybrid.
What’s new? S+ Shift gearbox simulation
The e:HEV RS introduces “S+ Shift”, a technology first showcased by Honda in Japan. It mimics the feel of an eight‑speed automatic by using a metal paddle behind the steering wheel, giving drivers a sporty “gear‑change” sensation even though the car actually runs on a single‑speed electric motor.
Building on the earlier Linear Shift Control, S+ Shift actively modulates torque, engine sound and a subtle “jerk” to recreate the experience of shifting gears, enhancing the vehicle’s athletic character.
Hybrid powertrain details
The system retains the e:HEV’s core specifications: a 184‑horsepower electric motor paired with a 315 Nm torque output, and a 2.0‑liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine that acts as a generator delivering 141 hp. When both sources cooperate at higher speeds, the combined output reaches 203 hp.
Where will it be sold?
In Japan, the S+ Shift is exclusive to the Civic e:HEV RS hatchback, which also features a stiffer suspension, Alcantara‑wrapped flat‑bottom steering wheel and 18‑inch “Berlina Black” alloy wheels borrowed from the US‑market Civic Si.
For Southeast Asian markets, Honda is likely to retain a traditional gear‑lever layout, as the compact paddle‑shifter may not suit regional preferences.
The Thai rollout marks the second major update this year, following Honda’s decision to replace its pure‑gas VTEC Turbo engine with a full hybrid setup. After Thailand, the upgraded Civic is expected to arrive in Malaysia later in 2026, and it could reach Vietnamese showrooms around the same time.
What’s changing for the ASEAN market?
Alongside the new hybrid, Honda plans to refresh the Civic’s driver‑assist suite across ASEAN: the LaneWatch camera will be dropped in favour of blind‑spot monitoring integrated into the side mirrors, rear‑cross‑traffic alerts and a 360‑degree camera system.
Current status in Vietnam
Today, Vietnam’s Honda dealers are still offering the 11th‑generation Civic, launched in 2024, in three trims priced between VND 789 million and VND 999 million. Enthusiasts will have to wait a few more months to see whether the e:HEV RS makes its debut.
