Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) has taken a major step toward the long‑awaited vision of autonomous air taxis. In partnership with technology firm Govy, the automaker has completed production of its first electric vertical take‑off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the Govy AirCab, and is gearing up for a commercial launch.

First Commercial eVTOL from GAC

The AirCab rolled out of GAC’s smart factory in Guangzhou, China, after passing rigorous certification processes and real‑world impact testing. Unlike many concepts that never leave the drawing board, this model is a fully certified, market‑ready vehicle with a limited production run of roughly 100 units per year.

Design and Performance

More than 90 % of the AirCab’s airframe is made from ultra‑light carbon‑fiber composite, keeping weight to a minimum. Six muscular arms extend from the cabin, each equipped with a pair of coaxial propellers that deliver optimal lift and thrust. While detailed specifications remain confidential, GAC disclosed a top speed of 120 km/h (≈75 mph) and an electric range of about 30 km (≈18 mi) on the current lithium‑ion battery pack.

Power and Battery Technology

The aircraft is powered by a high‑energy‑density cylindrical battery pack that can be fully recharged in roughly 25 minutes. GAC hints that future versions will incorporate solid‑state batteries, which could dramatically extend range and endurance for the next generation of eVTOLs.

Target Market and Business Model

Rather than chasing the mass‑transit eVTOL market, GAC is positioning the AirCab as a premium service for high‑end travel operators. The two‑seat air taxi is aimed at luxury tour companies that want to offer exclusive aerial sightseeing experiences in regions such as Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

Flight Tests and Safety

Govy has already demonstrated the AirCab in multiple live flight showcases across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, proving the aircraft’s reliability and performance. The AirCab also features Level 4 autonomous flight capabilities, backed by a multilayer safety architecture that enables hands‑free operation under most conditions.

Pricing and Availability

GAC announced a starting price of 1.68 million Chinese yuan, roughly $248,000 USD. With a production cap of about 100 units annually, the AirCab will initially be available to select luxury travel partners, with broader rollout plans pending regulatory approval.

As the eVTOL market matures, GAC’s high‑price, high‑luxury approach could set a benchmark for premium aerial mobility, while solid‑state battery advances promise to push the boundaries of range and efficiency in the years ahead.
