Volvo’s free OTA Car UX upgrade refreshes infotainment for 2.5 million models, adds AI-ready features and Google Gemini support. See what’s new today!
Volvo has launched the biggest over‑the‑air (OTA) software update in its history, called Volvo Car UX, reaching roughly 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries.

Free upgrade for recent models
The update is offered at no cost to owners of Volvo cars built from the 2020 model year onward, reinforcing the Swedish brand’s push toward a fully digital user experience.
Which models are compatible?
Volvo Car UX runs on the Google‑based platform and supports the following models: C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, and XC90.

Industry‑leading OTA scale
Anders Bell, Volvo’s head of Engineering & Technology, said, ‘This is one of the largest OTA updates ever in the automotive sector, leveraging years of investment in our technology platform to improve the driving experience for millions.’ He added that the new user interface focuses on the features drivers use most, directly reflecting customer feedback.
Streamlined interaction
Volvo Car UX reduces the number of taps needed to reach frequently used functions. The navigation system becomes more intuitive, and the overall look has been refreshed to feel modern and driver‑friendly.

Integrated map and entertainment
Key apps such as Maps, media and phone now appear on the main screen. Users no longer have to exit Google Maps to control music or other entertainment functions, enabling safer, seamless interaction while driving.
Context‑aware bar
A new contextual bar adapts its content based on the driving situation, showing the most relevant apps. For example, at low speeds a rear‑view camera icon appears to alert the driver that visual assistance is ready for tight maneuvers.

Plug‑in hybrid convenience
On PHEV models, a Drive Modes icon on the home screen provides instant access to Pure mode and other driving settings, allowing a quick shift from hybrid to pure‑electric operation with a single tap.
Optional driver‑assist add‑on
Customers with Google‑enabled vehicles can purchase and download the Pilot Assist driver‑assistance feature if it was not pre‑installed, showcasing Volvo’s ‘features on demand’ model.
AI‑ready with Google Gemini
The update is prepared for an “optimal conversational AI” experience powered by Google Gemini. Volvo plans to roll out this capability to compatible models later this year, opening the door to more natural, voice‑driven interaction between driver and car.
Future‑proofing the Volvo experience
This massive upgrade not only enhances the current user experience but also lays the groundwork for future digital services, cementing Volvo’s position in the era of connected, software‑defined vehicles.
