Atlas Energy Solutions, one of the nation’s biggest sand suppliers, has teamed up with Kodiak Robotics to launch the United States’ first fully autonomous sand‑hauling mission in the oil‑and‑gas sector.
Why Texas’s Permian Basin Needs Driverless Trucks
The Permian Basin in West Texas is notorious for its rugged, high‑traffic corridors. Between 2018 and 2022, the Permian Road Safety Alliance recorded 14.7 fatal crashes per 1,000 collisions – almost twice the Texas average. A large share of those incidents involved sand‑hauling trucks that operate 24/7 on tight schedules, often leading to driver fatigue.
Technology Behind Kodiak’s Driverless Truck
Kodiak’s autonomous truck is equipped with a sensor suite that includes 13 high‑resolution cameras, six radar units and four LiDAR modules. The system continuously monitors the surrounding environment and makes real‑time steering, braking and acceleration decisions, allowing the vehicle to travel a 33‑kilometre (about 20‑mile) route without a human behind the wheel.
From Test Runs to Full‑Scale Deployment
The first delivery with a safety driver on board took place in 2019. Since then, Kodiak has been refining its safety case to meet the stringent requirements for public‑road operation without a cab‑in occupant.
Addressing the Truck‑Driver Shortage
Instead of replacing drivers, autonomous trucks aim to alleviate a chronic labour gap. The American Trucking Associations estimates a shortfall of roughly 60,000 drivers nationwide. As veteran drivers retire, automation offers a way to keep freight moving while preserving jobs that focus on supervision, maintenance and logistics.

Kodiak plans to extend its safety package to long‑haul highway routes, targeting carriers that move goods across state lines. The company believes that driverless technology will become a core component of a more resilient and safer supply chain.
